It was always a battle between wrestling and entertainment as Goldberg and Brock Lesnar faced off to reach the climax of their 12-year old feud. WWE fans all over the world expected these two powerhouses to supercede their previous horrible encounter at Wrestlemania XX.

But the fans tasted a different music altogether. WWE did not go in any of the expected paths. Instead it was a shock value as Goldberg finished off ‘The Beast’ in 90 seconds. One intense staredown, two spears and one jackhammer- and that's all it took to draw curtains to the most anticipated match of recent times.

This was no different from the squash matches Goldberg performed in Nitro or the recent squash matches we have seen in Raw and Smackdown, where Braun Strowman or Nia Jax quickly disposes their opponents.

But here the opponent was Brock Lesnar- the best WWE can offer at this moment. The monster of a character that he has built over the years, from ending Undertaker’s streak at Wrestlemania to going out of the script to beatdown a bloodied Randy Orton- the name Brock Lesnar evoked fear. He has not been beaten cleanly since his return from UFC. Nevertheless, against Goldberg, Lesnar was demoted to being a mere jobber.

Surely, this treatment will come as a shocker for the WWE Universe. Talk of the town, storming social media- the ripples would be felt far and wide. WWE might have done it keeping the game WWE 2017 in mind, whose major selling point is Goldberg’s character. Kids, who are a major chunk of WWE 2k17’s target audience, would now be apprised of the legend.

But in the long term, it would be interesting to see WWE's plans vis-a-vis Brock Lesnar. His invincible beastly phenomenon has taken a major beating at the hands of Goldberg. The federation was heavily criticized in the past when The Rock squashed Eric Rowan in 6 seconds as it put the credibility of the current superstars into question. WWE has done it again- the beast, who sustained himself at a territory far superior to the current crop of superstars was beaten by a yesteryear superstar.

These are the exact kind of things that make fans rue about the past. It is now entirely up to WWE to rebuild the character of Brock Lesnar. This would probably take more than the immense talent of Paul Heyman to put things into place as they should be.
